Ali Baba Café
1905 Greenville Ave
(At Alta)
tel.: 214/823-8235
Location: At Alta
Cuisine: Middle Eastern
Price Category: Moderate

Family-owned (two brothers and their mom, by way of Syria) Ali Babba draws crowds for its good, and cheap, Middle Eastern fare during limited dining hours. Don't be surprised to find a line clamoring to get in. This plain, tiny place, tucked in among the vintage shops, bars, and furniture stores of Lower Greenville, packs them in for great, rich hummus, marinated beef, grilled chicken, falafel, and Syrian and Lebanese dishes like stuffed kibe. The tabbouleh and signature rice dish, made with vermicelli and sautéed in seasoned olive oil, are standouts. If you find yourself in North Dallas rather than downtown, check out the new Ali Baba Café & Market, 19009 Preston Rd. (tel. 972/248-8855), a larger and better lighted branch that contains a small market selling pastries and other foodstuffs.

Main courses $6-$14.Open: Tues-Sat 11:30am-1:45pm and 5:30-8:45pm.
