The Palm is one in a chain of 28 locations that started nearly 80 years ago in New York -- but here in D.C., it feels like an original. The Washington Palm is 32 years old; its walls, like those in all Palms, are covered with the caricatures of regulars, famous and not-so. (Look for my friend Bob Harris.) If you think you see Tim Russert or Larry King at a table, you're probably right. You can't go wrong with steak, whether it's the 36-ounce dry-aged New York strip, or sliced in a steak salad. Oversize lobsters are a specialty, and certain side dishes are a must: creamed spinach, onion rings, Palm fries (something akin to deep-fried potato chips), and hash browns. The restaurant allows you to order half-portions of these, so you have no excuse but to order at least one. Several of the longtime waiters like to kid with you a bit, but the service is always fast.

Lunch main courses $12-$21; dinner main courses $15-$64 (most items are in the neighborhood of $25 to $32).Open: Mon-Fri 11:45am-10:30pm; Sat 5:30-10:30pm; Sun 5:30-9:30pm.Reservations recommended.Credit Cards: AE, DC, MC, V.Metro: Dupont Circle.
