Before there was Domino's or Pizza Hut or Papa John's, there was Luigi's. Make that way before -- Luigi's opened in 1943. People who grew up in Washington consider Luigi's an essential part of their childhood. I took my daughters here one weekday several summers ago, and sure enough, it's remained a favorite place ever since. (They often ask to be taken here on their birthdays.) Whether you go at lunch or dinner, you can expect to be among a sea of office folks. At night, the restaurant's atmosphere changes a little, as office workers come in groups to unwind, have a drink, or get a bite; but this isn't a bar, so it doesn't get rowdy. The menu is long, listing all kinds of pastas, sandwiches, grilled dishes, and pizzas. Come here for a little local color, and to please everyone in the family.

Main courses $5-$17.Open: Mon-Sat 11am-midnight; Sun noon-midnight.Credit Cards: AE, DC, DISC, MC, V.Metro: Dupont Circle or Farragut North.
