Alexis is a classic Greek taverna, and the crowds keep it packed as much for the great food as for the fun atmosphere. On weekends there's belly dancing, and if you happen to be in town on March 25, you can help Alexis celebrate Greek Independence Day with a rousing big party. The menu has all your Greek favorites, and although the main dishes are good, the appetizers are even better. The not-to-be-missed list includes saganaki (pan-fried cheese flamed with ouzo), kalamarakia (perfectly fried squid), octopus, and the tart and creamy avgolemono soup. Accompany these with Alexis's own fresh bread, and wash it all down with a bottle of Demestica wine for a meal beyond compare. Although you're likely to be panhandled in front of the door (this is Portland's main mission district), don't let this put you off.
Appetizers $3.50-$9; main courses $11-$14.Open: Mon-Fri 11:30am-2pm; Mon-Thurs 5-10pm, Fri-Sat 5-11pm.Reservations recommended.Credit Cards: AE, DC, DISC, MC, V.
