DINING Frommer
Chez Jose East
2200 NE Broadway

tel.: 503/280-9888
Cuisine: Mexican
Price Category: Inexpensive

It's immediately obvious both from the hip decor and the menu that this isn't Taco Bell. While a squash enchilada with peanut sauce (spicy and sweet with mushrooms, apples, jicama, and sunflower seeds) sounds weird, it actually tastes great. Don't worry, though, there's plenty of traditional fare on the menu, too (and at traditional cheap prices). Because the restaurant doesn't take reservations, it's a good idea to get here early, before the line starts snaking out the door. This is a family-friendly place, so don't hesitate to bring the kids, and if the kids are under 6, they'll eat for free between 5 and 7pm.

Main courses $5.75-$11.50.Open: Mon-Thurs 11:30am-11pm, Fri-Sat 11:30am-midnight, Sun 5-10pm.Reservations accepted only for parties of 7 or more.Credit Cards: AE, MC, V.
