El Palenque
8324 SE 17th Ave

tel.: 503/231-5140
Cuisine: Latin American

Though El Palenque also bills itself as a Mexican restaurant, the Salvadoran dishes are the real reason to come. If you've never had a pupusa, this is your chance; it's basically an extra thick corn tortilla with a meat or cheese filling, accompanied by spicy shredded cabbage. Instead of adding the filling after the tortilla is cooked, the filling goes in beforehand, so you end up with a sort of griddle-cooked turnover. Accompany your pupusa with some fried plantains and a glass of horchata (sweet and spicy rice drink) for a typical Salvadoran meal.

Main courses $5-$13.Open: Daily 11:30am-9:30pm.Credit Cards: AE, MC, V.
