The gloomy streets don't affect the cocoon of chicdom at oh-so-hip butterfly, a sexy 3,500-square-foot supper club that's aflutter with good times and an impressively multicultural mix of San Franciscans. The spacious, dim, brick-walled warehouse restaurant/bar manages to be all things to most all San Francisco people. To some it's a good, albeit very noisy bar (which overlooks the open dining room and jazz band that performs after prime dining hours). To others it's a fine dining destination (equally noisy) where the eclectic mix of Pacific Rim foods range from huge plates of chunky tuna tartar, which is best enjoyed when scooped up with a wonton chip, mahi mahi and lobster mushu fish tacos, guava and sake-marinated pork loin, or crab and rock shrimp ravioli. But to everyone it's a place to hear live music--like it or not since the band plays loudly in hopes of being heard over the chatter of thirtysomething revelers.
