In the National Gallery, this hot new dining choice lies over the foyer of the Sainsbury Wing, providing a panoramic view of fabled Trafalgar Square. The view's a bonus -- it's the cuisine that attracts visitors. The restaurant is named for a striking mural by Paulo Rego that is painted on one side of a wall. The chefs are equally at home with both French and Italian dishes, offering wood-fired pizzas and bruschetta as well as other imaginative choices such as grilled skewered squid with eggplant and sun-dried tomato salad. Try the grilled rib of pork, marinated and served with baby artichokes. The lightly batter-fried sole is a worthy choice as well. The steamed salmon with leeks, cilantro, and ginger is an excellent dish, as is the red-pepper ravioli in a chive sauce. There is a cafe offshoot of Crivelli's Garden in the basement of the main building, which is a good choice for sandwiches, pastas, soups, and pastries.
