Burgh House

This Queen Anne home (1703), in the center of the village, was the residence of the daughter and son-in-law of Rudyard Kipling, who often visited here. It's now used for local art exhibits, concerts, recitals, talks, and public meetings on many subjects. The house is the headquarters of several local societies, including the Hampstead Music Club and the Hampstead Scientific Society. Hampstead Museum, in Burgh House, illustrates the local history of the area. It has a room devoted to reproductions of works by the great artist John Constable, who lived nearby for many years and is buried in the local parish church. There's also a licensed buttery (tel. 020/7431-7401) that's popular for lunch or tea, with lunches for just £5 ($8) during the week (£5.35/$8.55 on Sat and £5.95/$9.50 on Sun). In pricey Hampstead, it's a real dining bargain.

Open: House and museum Wed-Sun noon-5pm, Sat by appt.; buttery Wed-Sun 11am-5:30pm.Free admission.Tube: Northern Line to Hampstead.
