Dining here could well be the culinary highlight of your trip. Serving nouvelle French cuisine that utilizes the best of Japanese style and ingredients in what could be called French kaiseki, this lovely and exclusive restaurant stands on narrow Pontocho, which parallels the Kamo River and is one of Kyoto's most famous nightlife districts. Located in a century-old renovated wooden building that once belonged to a geisha, Misogi-Gawa is owned by master chef T. Inoue, who trained in Paris and successfully blends the two cuisines into dishes artfully prepared and served on Japanese tableware. One of the delights of eating here lies in receiving the various courses that are part of fixed-price meals, each one exquisitely arranged as though a work of art. The menu (written in French and changing regularly) includes lobster, sole, scallops, and various beef dishes, including a set steak course for ¥12,000. Seating options include a U-shaped counter with tatami seating and leg wells, another informal counter for customers who prefer to order à-la-carte dishes one by one, private tatami rooms, and, in summer, an outdoor veranda overlooking the river.
