It's easy to find this restaurant, a many-storied place on the corner of Pontocho and Shijo Dori, right beside the bridge spanning the Kamo River. The backside faces the river, and in the summer a wooden veranda is constructed on stilts over the water. Note, however, that the veranda (open 6 to 10pm), is only for those who reserve in advance for kaiseki set meals. Otherwise, popular with tourists and groups, Izumoya serves a wide variety of dishes on its various floors, including shabu-shabu and set meals of tempura, sashimi, eel, and other Japanese dishes. Although the menu is in Japanese only, there's a large display of plastic food at the front door to help with ordering.
Obento ¥2,800-¥4,800; shabu-shabu or sukiyaki from ¥3,200; kaiseki ¥6,000-¥10,000.
Open: Thurs-Tues noon-9pm (last order).
Reservations recommended, especially for kaiseki.
