Nestled in an inner courtyard off busy Shijo Dori and offering a peaceful retreat in the heart of downtown Kyoto, this restaurant has been serving a variety of Japanese food at moderate prices since 1868. The English menu (with photos) includes Kyoryoori set meals, tempura, obento lunch boxes, seasonal kaiseki courses, and yuba (a low-calorie curd made from soy milk). Inexpensive noodles and set lunches for less than ¥1,500 are served until 3pm. Seating is either at tables or on tatami.
Set meals ¥3,000-¥8,000.

Bus: 5, 17, or 205 to Shijo-Kawaramachi. Entrance is off Sanjo Dori near the Kyoto Central Inn (look for a tiny door with a white sign; step through it and follow the passageway to the back courtyard).
