Although it's technically a drinking establishment, this inexpensive yakitori-ya is a great place to dine as well. Popular with young Japanese, it offers yakitori, sushi, and other Japanese bar foods. Be sure to remove your shoes at the entryway and place them in one of the lockers provided, but you might want to choose your meal from the display case first, or simply look around at what others are eating once you're settled.
Two skewers of yakitori ¥280; sushi ¥480-800 per piece.
Open: Sun-Fri 4:30-11:30pm, Sat 4:30pm-midnight.
Credit Cards: No credit cards.
Subway: Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae, then a 4-min. walk. Bus: 5 to Kawaramachi Sanjo, then a 2-min. walk. On the west side of Pontocho just south of Sanjo Dori; look for a big white sign and a large display case of plastic food with a kite above it.
