This 300-year-old restaurant first opened its doors to serve pilgrims and visitors on their way to Nanzenji Temple. Today it consists of two parts, one offering expensive kaiseki meals and the other offering seasonal obento lunch boxes. The kaiseki meals are served in separate tiny houses situated around a beautiful garden with a pond, maple trees, and bushes; the oldest house, which resembles a small teahouse, is more than 3 centuries old. Seating is on cushions on a tatami floor in your own private room, with your food brought to you by kimono-clad women. The other part of the restaurant serves obento lunch boxes; the menu depends on the season, and seating here is at tables and chairs.

Kaiseki lunches from ¥18,000, dinners from ¥20,000; obento lunch boxes from ¥4,000; breakfast from ¥3,550. Open: Daily 8am-7pm (last order). Closed the second and fourth Tues of month. Reservations required for kaiseki, recommended for obento. Credit Cards: AE, DC, JCB, MC, V. Bus: 5 to Nanzenji. East of Shirakawa Dori on the main road leading to Nanzenji Temple; look for a plain facade hidden behind a bamboo fence, with a sign shaped like a gourd.
