CURRENCY CONVERTER
Established almost a century ago by the present owner's grandfather, this restaurant in the heart of Gion is housed in a 100-year-old building that was once a private home. The house specialty is an aburayaki meal, which consists of beef filet cooked with various vegetables and seasoned with soy sauce and wine. Sukiyaki, mizudaki (similar to shabu-shabu but stronger in taste), and teppanyaki are also available from the English menu. If you order sukiyaki or mizudaki, you'll sit in your own private tatami room on the second floor; if you order teppanyaki, seating is at a counter, where the chef (the first female teppanyaki chefs we've seen) will prepare your food in front of you on a hot griddle. Outside the window is a pleasant view of the Shirakawa River.

Steak and shabu-shabu meals ¥5,000-¥15,000; set lunches ¥4,500. Open: Mon-Sat noon-2:30pm and 5-9:30pm (last order). Reservations recommended. Credit Cards: AE, DC, JCB, MC, V. Bus: 206 to Gion, then a 5-min. walk; or 5, 17, or 205 to Shijo-Kawaramachi, then a 5-min. walk. From Shijo Dori, go 1 block north on Nawate Dori and take the first left.
