One of Japan's best-known restaurants for Kyoto cuisine, Minokichi was founded in 1719 and is now in its 10th generation of restaurateurs. With several branches in Japan, including a handful in Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo, this flagship restaurant consists of various dining venues in several buildings, including a 200-year-old thatched farmhouse and an elegantly simple modern building reminiscent of tea-ceremony rooms, all with magnificent views of a graceful bamboo garden. The specialty is Kyoto kaiseki; emphasis is on the appearance of the food, with great care given to the selection and preparation of seasonal ingredients. Although the dishes themselves change, a kaiseki meal here always consists of eight items: appetizer, raw fish, soup, food cooked in delicate broth, steamed food, broiled food, deep-fried food, and vinegared food.
Kyo-kaiseki dinners ¥15,000-¥30,000; kaiseki lunches ¥10,000-¥15,000.
Open: Daily 11:30am-7:30pm (last order).
Reservations required for dinner, recommended for lunch.
Credit Cards: AE, DC, JCB, MC, V.
Subway: Keage (10 min.). North of Sanjo Dori on the road that leads to the Zoological Gardens.
