Opened 400 years ago to serve worshippers on their way to Yasaka Shrine, this tiny one-room teahouse is said to be the oldest restaurant in Japan. With an open facade in summer, it specializes in tofu dengaku, skewers of tofu smothered in miso sauce. The tofu dengaku obento offers skewers and other dishes in a complete meal, but if you simply want to try the restaurant's specialty without the big meal, you can order just three sticks of tofu dengaku. Beside the teahouse is a handsome wooden restaurant, added in the 19th century, where kaiseki meals are served in lovely rooms overlooking a magnificent garden.
Tofu dengaku obento ¥3,600; 3 sticks of tofu dengaku ¥500. Kaiseki meals ¥10,000 at lunch, ¥15,000 at dinner.
Open: Daily 11:30am-6pm for tofu obento, to 7pm for kaiseki.
Closed last Thurs of each month.
Credit Cards: No credit cards.
Bus: 206 to Gion. At the south entrance to Yasaka Shrine, next to the stone torii gate.
