Smack-dab in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, Café Lulu aims for a hip, bohemian mood despite little clues to the contrary (like the Wall Street Journal hanging on racks for browsing). Ostensibly a coffee bar, the cafe also makes a good choice for casual dining; if the stylishly dark interior is too harsh for you, watch the street action from a sidewalk table. The food is health conscious, largely prepared with organic ingredients. Soups, salads, cheese melts, and veggie lasagna are on the list; breads come from the incomparable Bread & Cie. uptown. Eggs, granola, and waffles are served in the morning, but anytime is the right time to try one of the inventive coffee drinks, like cafe Bohème (mocha with almond syrup) or cafe L'amour (iced latte with a hazelnut tinge). Beer and wine are also served, and if you're staying downtown they offer free delivery in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Main courses $6-$9.Open: Sun-Thurs 10am-1am; Fri-Sat 10am-3am.Credit Cards: Not Accepted.Bus: 1, 3, 5, 16, or 25. Trolley: Convention Center.
