In a restored 1894 beach bungalow, this charming cafe has a history as intriguing as its varied, eclectic menu. Named for an early resident's hometown (Brockton, Massachusetts), the cottage is imbued with the spirit of artistic souls drawn to this breathtaking perch overlooking La Jolla Cove. Rescued by the trailblazing Pannikin Coffee Company in the 1960s, the restaurant is now independently run by a Pannikin alum.

The biggest buzz is at breakfast, when you can enjoy inventive dishes such as soufflélike "Coast Toast" (the house take on French toast) and Greek "steamers" (eggs scrambled with an espresso steamer, then mixed with feta cheese, tomato, and basil). The dozens of coffee drinks include the "Keith Richards"--four shots of espresso topped with Mexican hot chocolate (Mother's Little Helper indeed!). Lunch stars include homemade soups and salads, plus unusual sandwiches like turkey meat loaf on toasted sourdough bread with spicy tomato-mint chutney. The expanding supper menu includes Moroccan halibut with a spicy tomato relish, and villa paella (seafood and shellfish tumbled with artichoke hearts and a warm caper vinaigrette), plus pastas, stews, and grilled meats. Steep stairs from the street limit access for wheelchair users.
