This ersatz 14-acre village snuggled alongside San Diego Bay was built to resemble a small Cape Cod community, but the 75 shops are very much the Southern California cutesy variety. The atmosphere is pleasant, and there are a few gems; favorites include the Tile Shop, featuring hand-painted tiles from Mexico and beyond; the San Diego City Store, with all your local signage needs; Island Hoppers, for resort wear; and the Upstart Crow bookshop and coffeehouse, with the Crow's Nest children's bookstore inside. Be sure to see the 1890 carousel imported from Coney Island, New York.
