Take a stroll down Mexico way--and points south--through the arched passageways of this bustling corner of Old Town. A dilapidated 1930s motel-turned-world market, the central courtyard vibrates with folkloric music, mariachis, costumed dancing, and a splashing fountain. The 16 inter-connected shops--all owned by entrepreneur Diane Powers--feature one-of-a-kind folk art, home furnishings, clothing, and textiles from Mexico and Central and South America. Favorites include Design Center Accessories, where you'll find dinnerware and table pieces with Latin accents; Libros, a small but smartly chosen bookstore with a large kids' selection; the Laurel Birch Gallerita, featuring the namesake designer's apparel; and The Gallery, which showcases American Indian and contemporary jewelry and other crafts. You won't find bargains like you would on the other side of the border--it's clearly tourist central--but there isn't a more colorful place to browse in San Diego, and you won't have to deal with snoopy Customs officials. If imbibing an oversized margarita or plate of enchiladas strikes your fancy, there are a half-dozen restaurants in and around the Bazaar--12.4 million tortillas and 24 tons of avocados were served here in 2002!
