Denver Zoo

More than 700 species of animals (more than 4,000 individuals) live in this spacious zoological park. Feeding times are posted near the zoo entrance so you can time your visit to see the animals at their most active. Bear Mountain, built in 1918, was the first animal exhibit in the United States constructed of simulated concrete rockwork. Northern Shores (1987) allows underwater viewing of polar bears and sea lions. Tropical Discovery (1994) re-creates an entire tropical ecosystem under glass, complete with crocodiles and piranhas, as well as the world's largest indoor habitat for the rare Komodo dragon. Exotic waterfowl inhabit several ponds, and 300 avians live in Bird World, which includes a hummingbird forest and a tropical aviary. The 7-acre Primate Panorama is a world-class exhibit with 29 species, ranging from a 6-ounce marmoset to a 600-pound gorilla.

The zoo is home to the nation's first natural gas-powered zoo train. The electric Safari Shuttle ($2.50 adults, $1.50 children) tours all zoo paths from spring through fall. An especially kid-friendly attraction is the Conversation Carousel ($1), featuring wood-carved renditions of such endangered species as okapi, polar bears, Komodo dragons, and hippos.

The Hungry Elephant, a cafeteria with an outdoor eating area, serves full meals, and snack bars are scattered throughout the zoo. Many visitors bring picnic lunches to eat on the expansive lawns. Allow from 2 hours to a whole day.
