High Museum of Art Folk Art and Photography Galleries

Inside the impressive Georgia-Pacific Building near Five Points, this downtown branch of the High Museum of Art displays folk art and photography. Allow about an hour for your visit. Visitors can enter through an elegantly landscaped courtyard on John Wesley Dobbs Avenue, or from Peachtree Street via the imposing Georgia-Pacific lobby, itself the setting for Louise Nevelson's vast indoor environmental sculpture in white wood, Dawn's Forest. Spanning three levels, the museum has beautiful walls paneled in an African wood called angré, and pedestrian ramps afford visitors a view of the downtown skyline as they descend to the galleries.

The two levels of galleries provide approximately 5,000 square feet of exhibition space. The upper gallery has a barrel-vaulted ceiling with Plexiglas inserts allowing daylight to flood the space. In addition to exhibitions, the museum offers films, lectures, concerts, and gallery talks (call for details). The Georgia-Pacific Building, by the way, is built on the site of the Loew's Grand Theatre, where Gone With the Wind premiered in 1939.
