Since 1964, when Conrad Hilton first opened it as a place to relax far from the crowds of Waikiki, the Kahala has always been rated one of Hawaii's premiere hotels; a venerable who's who of celebrities have stayed here, including every president since Richard Nixon. Now owned by the Mandarin Oriental chain, renowned for its excellent service, and with $75 million in renovations (completed in March 1996), this grande dame of hotels has reached a new level. It retains the traditional feeling of an earlier time in Hawaii--which defined the Kahala for a generation--accenting it with exotic Asian touches; the result is a resort hotel for the 21st century, but with the grace and elegance of a softer, gentler time. The location offers a similarly wonderful compromise: Situated in one of Oahu's most prestigious residential areas, the Kahala offers the peace and serenity of a neighbor-island vacation, with the conveniences of Waikiki just a 10-minute drive away. All the guest rooms have been totally remodeled with 19th-century mahogany reproductions, teak parquet floors with hand-loomed Tibetan rugs, overstuffed chairs, canopy beds covered with soft throw pillows, and artwork by local artists adorning the grass-cloth-covered walls. Views from the floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors are of the ocean, Diamond Head, and Koko Head. Some of the more modern conveniences in the rooms include two-line phones, computer and fax connections, 27-inch TV, and Super Nintendo. The large bathrooms include vintage fixtures, a freestanding glass shower, a large soaking tub, "his" and "hers" dressing areas, plush bathrobes and slippers, a hair dryer, and an illuminated makeup mirror. Dining/Diversions: At Hoku's, the main dining room, every table has an ocean view and features Pacific and European cuisine. Plumeria Beach Cafe serves both creative and traditional cuisine in a casual, open-air setting; its specialty is Sunday brunch. There's also a poolside snack bar, an oceanfront bar, and a lobby lounge with nightly entertainment.
Amenities: The lush, tropical grounds include an 800-foot crescent-shaped beach, a swimming pool, and a 26,000-square-foot lagoon, home to two bottle-nosed dolphins, sea turtles, and tropical fish. There's also 24-hour room service, valet and self-parking, nightly turndown, in-room safe, fax and modem connections, baby-sitting, concierge, foreign exchange facilities, Hawaiian cultural program, massage, multilingual personnel, business center, shops, banquet and meeting rooms, and shuttle service to Waikiki and major shopping centers. Free scuba lessons in pool; daily dolphin-education talks by a trainer from Sea Life Park; fitness center with steam rooms, dry sauna, Jacuzzis, weight room, Stairmasters, treadmills; Kahala Keiki Club for kids.
