Portraits of the hotels namesake, Princess Kaiulani, heir to the throne who died in 1899 at the age of 24, fill the large open-air lobby. Her regal, youthful face looks out on the site that was once her royal estate. A huge swimming pool sits behind a row of restaurants and shops facing Kalakaua Avenue. The open-air lobby connects the three buildings of the Princess Kaiulani: the 11-story original hotel that opened in 1955, and the 11-story Kaiulani wing and the 29-story Ainahau Tower that both opened in 1960.
The rooms have been recently renovated, and double-insulated doors with soundproofing have been added. We wish every hotel in noisy Waikiki had this feature. The soundproofing really works: You cant hear the blaring sirens or the sound of garbage cans being emptied at 3am. Other amenities include lanais, coffeemakers, safes, refrigerators, hair dryers, and irons and ironing boards.
Dining/Diversions: Pikake Terrace offers casual dining in a poolside garden; Lotus Moon features Mandarin cuisine from northern China; Momoyama specializes in Japanese dishes; and Minute Chef is an international food court with everything from burgers to stir-fry. The Polynesian Revue features nightly shows on the dances, songs, culture, and drama of Polynesia.
Amenities: Multilingual staff and Keiki Aloha Club, a free kids' program available daily.
