An hours drive from Waikiki and eons away from that tourist mecca is this luxurious oceanfront resort in a country setting. Sitting on 808 acres, this is a resort loaded with activities: 27 holes of golf, 10 tennis courts, and 5 miles of shoreline with secluded white-sand coves. The resort was built on Kalaeokaunu Point ("point of the altar"), where ancient Hawaiians built a small altar to the fish gods. Its remains are now at the Bishop Museum, but it is easy to see why the Hawaiians considered this holy ground. Next to the point is Kuilima Cove, one of the safest swimming beaches on the North Shore, thanks to the large reef offshore.
The feeling of old Hawaii is carried through to the guest rooms, which are done in Polynesian decor and have a private lanai, all the amenities, and a great ocean view.
Dining/Diversions: The Palm Terrace is known for fabulous buffets. Sunday champagne brunch at the Sea Tide Room is a favorite. The Cove, which features continental and local cuisine, is best known for its excellent wine list. Theres live entertainment nightly at the Bay View Lounge, and the Hang Ten Lounge is the place for poolside or sunset cocktails.
