In December 1993, some 17 miles and 25 minutes west of Honolulu Airport--and worlds away from the tourist scene of Waikiki--the first hotel in the 640-acre Ko Olina Resort community opened to much speculation. Its so far from Waikiki and Honolulu, critics charged, who would want go all the way out there? Lots of people, it turns out. The Ihilani has been well booked ever since. Located in the quiet of Oahus West (leeward) Coast, Ihilani ("heavenly splendor") is nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the first of four manmade beach lagoons. Featuring a luxury spa and fitness center, plus tennis and golf at Ko Olina, its a haven of relaxation and well-being.
Rising some 15 stories along the virgin coastline, its hard to get a bad room here--some 85% of guest rooms enjoy lagoon or ocean views. The luxuriously appointed rooms are larger than most (680 square feet) and come with huge lanais outfitted with comfortable, cushioned teak furniture (chaise longue, chairs, and table). The rooms feature a state-of-the-art comfort controlsystem panel (to operate the ceiling fans, air-conditioning, lights, and so on) built into the three phones, CD player, minibar, and in-room safe. Luxurious marble bathrooms have deep-soaking tubs, separate glass-enclosed showers, hair dryers, yukata robes, and many more amenities.
Dining/Diversions: Extraordinary cuisine, using the freshest local ingredients is found in all three Ihilani restaurants. The jewel is Azul, an intimate terrace overlooking the ocean serving Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Theres open-air dining on light, tropical fare at an informal poolside restaurant, and a low-fat, low-calorie menu is served at the Spa Cafe. Island artists provide entertainment and music to dance by in the resorts two lounges.
Amenities: Concierge, 24-hour room service, daily newspaper, business services, transportation to Waikiki and Ala Moana Shopping Center. Keiki Beachcomber Club is a year-round program for toddlers to teens, housed in its own ground-floor facility, with a wide variety of outdoor adventures and indoor learning activities, including a Computer Learning Center, a 125-gallon fish tank, an evening lounge for teen-themed parties, and more. Championship 18-hole Ko Olina Golf Course, designed by Ted Robinson and recognized as one of Hawaii's premier courses; a tennis club with pro shop; shopping arcade; 3-mile coastal fitness trail; two pools; and a stretch of four white-sand beaches. The world-class Ihilani Spa offers just about everything to enhance your health, fitness, and well-being, including thalassic treatments, Swiss showers, Grand Jets, Vichy showers, and Roman pools. Shiatsu, Swedish, and Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massages and herbal bodywraps are offered. Complete fitness and relaxation programs can be custom-designed. For us, the spa alone is reason enough to come here.
