The couple who served delectable, wholesome vegetarian food in a casual, winning ambience wanted to sell this icon and move back to the mainland. They used the same good sense in selecting a buyer that they did in creating their menu. They passed on this one-of-a-kind restaurant to Andrea Pisciotta, a former waitress in the restaurant who loved the place and wanted to continue the tradition. The first things Pisciotta did were upgrade the facilities, repaint the walls, put in new artwork, introduce fish on the menu, and add dinners on Friday nights with live entertainment. This is "the place" to get going in the morning, with such attractions as espresso, pancakes (multigrain with bananas, multigrain with apple-spice, and so on), and homemade sourdough French toast served with fresh bananas and real maple syrup. Lunch is packed; people come for the several varieties of garden burger, a modest staple elevated to gourmet status. You can top yours with sautéed mushrooms, grilled onions, pesto, fresh-grated Parmesan, and other choices. Other lunch notables: fresh rosemary home fries, a heroic grilled vegetable sandwich, and whole roasted garlic heads. On the Friday-night dinner menu, the Italian specialties shine: Southwestern-style lasagna (with green chiles, polenta, and sun-dried tomatoes); lasagna quattro formaggio with spinach, mushrooms, and four cheeses; crepes; and the nightly special with the cafe's famous marinara sauce -- terrific choices all. There's no liquor license, so if you want wine, bring your own.
