In 1997, 5 years after Hurricane Iniki, Kauai was still recovering economically when Jennifer and Bruce Hickman took over the Old Hanalei Coffee Company. This was the first of three Java Kai coffeehouses on Kauai (there's also one in Honolulu, one in California, and more to come) featuring coffee grown in Hawaii, a gourmet bakery, and a juice bar. They also serve a few breakfast and lunch items (waffles, quiche, and sandwiches).
