Garden of Eden
571 Tremont St

tel.: 617/247-8377
Cuisine: French
Price Category: Moderate

Almost as well known for its people-watching as for its cuisine, Garden of Eden sits on a busy corner on the South End's main drag. It's a good place to go for neighborhood gossip as well as tasty food served at communal tables (and on the patio in good weather). You can order everything from breakfast to cappuccino with a delectable pastry to a full meal. The unusual sandwiches on fresh-baked bread are especially popular -- chicken breast and Swiss cheese with cucumbers and Dijon vinaigrette on whole-wheat raisin-pecan sounds like too much, but it's just right; the namesake sandwich of mesclun, red onion, blue cheese, and (of course) apples on a baguette is equally satisfying. Dinner entrees are French country comfort food -- coq au vin, yummy macaroni and cheese, and a chicken pot pie whose entire description reads "Wow is this good." True all around.

Sandwiches and salads $5-$9.50; main courses $5.50-$15.Open: Mon-Fri 7am-11pm; Sat-Sun 7:30am-11pm.Credit Cards: AE, DC, DISC, MC, V.T: Orange Line to Back Bay.
