This impressive reincarnation of the original Brasserie -- a New York legend from 1959 to 1995 -- boasts a futuristic makeover and the wonderful cooking of Alsace native Luc Dimnet (formerly of Les Célébrités). Although the setting is mod-designed to within an inch of its life (you expect Twiggy, or a twentysomething Mick Jagger with Marianne Faithfull on his arm, to waltz in at any moment), the food is surprisingly classic brasserie fare. Robust onion soup gratinee; even a mixed-green salad is elevated above the norm with a delicate vinaigrette, a pleasing mix of lettuces, and crunchy-fresh French beans. The menu runs the gamut from classic bistro burgers to coq au vin, making it easy to eat casually or more elaborately. There's a small but lovely raw selection, too. Bread comes as a fresh-baked baguette wrapped in paper -- a pleasingly authentic touch in an ultramodern space that design could overwhelm, but doesn't.

Main courses $8.50-$29 at brunch and lunch (most less than $22), $15-$29 at dinner (most less than $25).Open: Mon-Fri 7am-1am; Sat 11am-1am; Sun 5pm-10pm.Reservations recommended for lunch and dinner.Credit Cards: AE, DC, DISC, MC, V.Subway: 6 to 51st St.
