Located in the Goose Hollow neighborhood at the foot of the West Hills, this small French restaurant is utterly unremarkable looking from the exterior and thoroughly French and unpretentiously sophisticated on the inside. The menu is one of the most extraordinary in the city, combining the finest of ingredients in unusual flavor combinations that almost always hit the mark. A recent menu included an exceedingly complex appetizer of sautéed Hudson Valley foie gras served with a date-studded brioche, apples, and Muscovy duck with a sauternes sauce. Wine showed up again in the main courses in a sauce served over roasted salmon mignon with French black truffle risotto, wild mushrooms, and watercress salad with a white truffle oil dressing. With dishes here being among the most memorable in the city, it is not surprising that many people opt for the six-course tasting menu so that they can sample a wide range of dishes. Serious about desserts? How about a Grand Marnier soufflé?

Main courses $28-$36; tasting menu $75. Open: Tues-Sat 5:30-9pm. Reservations necessary. Credit Cards: AE, MC, V.
