Higgins, located just up Broadway from the Heathman Hotel, where chef Greg Higgins first made a name for himself in Portland, strikes a balance between contemporary and classic in both its decor and its cuisine. The menu, which changes frequently, explores contemporary culinary horizons, while the decor in the trilevel dining room opts for wood paneling and elegant place settings. In the open kitchen, copper pots hang on the wall. Adding a dash more of classic ambience are waiters in long white aprons. Both subtle and earthy flavors abound here. Clams steamed in white wine and red curry with spring onions was a heavenly way to begin, and grilled rockfish with baby leeks in a pool of spicy carrot sauce was inventive enough to be interesting, yet homey and satisfying. Be sure to leave room for dessert.

Main courses lunch $7-$13, dinner $15-$24. Open: Mon-Fri 11:30am-2pm; daily 5-10:30pm. Reservations highly recommended. Credit Cards: AE, DC, MC, V. Bistro menu served in the bar daily 2pm-midnight.
