Bastas is located in a renovated Tasti Freez, but there's no way you'd know it except for the peaked roof. Inside, warm Mediterranean colors and candlelight create a spare hut relaxing setting in which to enjoy such dishes as veal sautéed with shiitake mushrooms or a selection from about a dozen pastas. As an antipasti, the grilled calamari with ricotta and olives we tried was tasty, but the portion was quite small. The sauce on the duck pasta dish was ordinary and almost bland, but we really liked the zingy sauce on the puttanesca pasta. It's difficult to choose among the dolci, but our favorite dessert is an utterly creamy crème caramel. With a well-chosen beverage menu and a respectable list of Italian wines (with a wide range of prices), this place is a good Italian dining alternative to the nearby Café Mingo.
Main courses $8-$17.
