If there's any problem with this intimate little cafe, which is immensely popular and doesn't take reservations, it's that you almost always have to wait for a table. The solution? Get here as early as possible. The interior is as attractive as that of any other upscale restaurant here on Restaurant Row, but the prices are less expensive. This, I'm sure, is one of the reasons Café Mingo is so popular. Another is the quality of the food. The menu is short, and focuses on painstakingly prepared Italian comfort food. Just about all of the items on the menu are winners, from the inslata caprese, a salad with tomato, house-made fresh mozzarella, basil, and extra-virgin olive oil, to grilled Italian sausage with braised savoy cabbage and cannellini beans. We long to go back here again just for the panna cotta dessert: "cooked cream" with poached fruit.
Main courses $8-$16.
Open: Sun-Thurs 5-10pm, Fri-Sat 5-11pm.
Reservations accepted only for parties of 6 or more.
Credit Cards: AE, DISC, MC, V.
