This is one of the best Italian restaurants in Portland, and with only 10 tables, it's also one of the smallest. The dining room is furnished in dark classic elegance, with a sitting room in hack where you can sip an aperitif while you wait for your table. Everything is made fresh in the kitchen with the best of locally available seasonal ingredients, from the breads to the luscious desserts. This is an ideal setting for a romantic dinner, and service is attentive--the waiter explains dishes in detail as they are served, and dishes are magically whisked away as they are finished.

The fixed-price menu changes every couple of weeks, but a typical dinner might start with prosciutto accompanied by balsamic-infused vegetables and olive oil, followed by a creamy wild mushroom soup. The pasta course could be a lasagna, with braised fresh artichokes layered with a béchamel sauce and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. This might then be followed by a fish course of sautéed calamari. There is always a choice of main courses such as quail stuffed with juniper berries and sage or baked halibut with a sauce of clams, shallots, garlic, white wine, and parsley.

Desserts are a standout. It takes a Herculean restraint to choose from a selection that includes chocolate and nut tortes, fresh berry tarts, or liqueur-infused desserts. However you decide, the finishing touch is a fresh fruit course.

Fixed-price 4-course dinner $45, 7-course dinner $55. Open: Mon-Sat 5:30-9:30pm (4-course on Fri-Sat limited to 5:30 and 6pm seatings only). Reservations required. Credit Cards: AE, CB, DC, DISC, MC, V.
