Drawing on Native American cooking and indigenous ingredients of North and South America, this is one of the most unusual restaurants in Portland. We're not talking Indian fry bread here; the food at Fiddleheads is inventive and flavorful. For example, you might find wild rice and corn fritters served with crab and crayfish as an appetizer, or tatonka, a buffalo stew that's a bit like chili and is served with corn dumplings. For less unusual fare, look for the likes of beef tenderloin with Pinot Noir sauce. Entrees are likely to leave you fulfilled but not stuffed, and eager to try dessert. A warm bing cherry dumpling perhaps? Wine choices are many, and the prices are moderate. Half a dozen vegetarian dishes appear on the menu, and brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday.

Main courses lunch $6.75-$8.75, dinner $14-$23. Open: Mon-Sat 11:30am-11pm, Sun 11am-10pm. Reservations recommended. Credit Cards: AE, DISC, MC, V.
