Location: At Akard, in the Adolphus Hotel
Cuisine: French
Price Category: Very Expensive

Perhaps the Dallas restaurant that will make the biggest impression on your dining companions and credit card statement, the French Room, under an elaborate vaulted ceiling in the historic Adolphus Hotel, is a standout in every way. Formal but not stuffy, with impeccable service, it is a place to feel like king and queen for a day. An interesting twist is the price structure: You simply pay according to the number of courses ($59 for two, $67 for three, or $77 for four; the vegetarian menu, however, is four courses for $67). Dinner here is the closest thing in Dallas to a state dinner at Versailles. From beef tenderloin with a black truffle-potato terrine to miso-marinated Alaskan halibut with baby shiitake and sweet potatoes in carrot ginger sauce, the menu is superb throughout. Dessert might be a crème brûlée trio or, even better, the soufflé of the day (flavors change daily). As you might expect, the wine list is museum-quality, but there are also accessible options. Coat and tie are required for men.

Prix-fixe dinners $59-$77 (not including wine, tips, or tax). 6-course chef's tasting menu $90 or $125 (with wine).Open: Tues-Sat 6-10pm.Reservations required.Credit Cards: AE, DC, DISC, MC, V.DART Light Rail: Akard Station.
