Russian Cobra

|
This Cold War-era Russian submarine is berthed just south of Washington State Ferries' Colman Dock at the south end of the waterfront, and the long black submarine is an ominous sight on this touristy stretch of Seattle shoreline. This sub, code-named Cobra, was built in 1972 and was in service for 20 years. A visit includes an introductory video that provides a bit of background on Russian submarines. After watching the video, you board the sub for a self-guided tour of the sub's main deck. Although an audio recording explains different parts of the sub as you walk through, there is also usually a former U.S. Navy submariner on hand to answer general questions about submarines. For anyone who lived through the Cold War, it is thrilling just to be inside a sub that was once considered "the enemy."
