Nightlife: The Gay & Lesbian Scene
The city's lively Quartier Gai/Gay Village comprises a stretch of rue Ste-Catherine from rue St-Hubert to rue Papineau. One of the largest gay and lesbian communities in North America, it is action central for both natives and visitors, especially during such annual events as the 10 days celebrating sexual diversity known as Divers/Cité in early August (www.diverscite.org). Much excitement has attended the announcement that Montréal will host the Gay Games in 2006 (www.montreal2006.org). Tourisme Québec has launched www.bonjourquebec.com/anglais/idees_vac/gai.html, providing information and resources of interest to gay and lesbian travelers. In addition, the Québec Gay Chamber of Commerce has a website at www.tourismegai.com. Of several targeted local publications, the most useful magazine is Fugues, describing current and future events as well as listing gay-friendly lodgings, clubs, saunas, and other resources. Get a copy at the tourist office (tel. 514/522-1885) opposite the Beaudry Métro station, or check www.fugues.com.
