This lively festival draws thousands of Celts from around the world for a week of Celtic culture and heritage. Celts dominated Europe for centuries before the Roman Empire pushed them to the north and west, into the areas that now make up the six Celtic nations of Ireland, Cornwall, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, and the Isle of Man. This event is a dream come true for fans of Celtic music, as there are competitions in traditional music and singing. Participants often break into spontaneous dance, as the soulful sounds of flutes and bagpipes fill the air.

Art and other displays of Celtic culture add to the mix. Those interested in exploring their Celtic roots can attend dance workshops and classes in all the Celtic languages. The literary-minded can check out poetry readings, dramatic performances, and book launches. Athletic types can watch or compete in Celtic sports such as pool or hurling, a lacrosse-like game played by teams of 15 who thrash at a leather ball with crooked wooden sticks, called hurleys.•
