Active Pursuits: Biking Frommer

Portland is a very bicycle-friendly city, and you'll notice plenty of bicyclists on Portland streets. There are also lots of miles of paved bike paths around the city, and a some good mountain biking areas as well. However, if you want to get rolling with everyone else, you don't have too many choices for rentals, but at Fat Tire Farm, 2714 NW Thurman St. (tel. 503/222-3276), you can rent a mountain bike for $40 a day. Straight up Thurman Street from the bike shop, you'll find the trailhead for the Leif Erikson Trail, and old gravel road that is Forest Park's favorite route for cyclists and runners (the road is closed to motor vehicles); the trail is 12 miles long.
