Active Pursuits: Beaches Frommer

The nearest ocean beaches are Cannon Beach (a charming village) and Seaside (an old-fashioned family beach town), about 90 miles to the west.

There are a couple of freshwater beaches on the Columbia River within 45 minutes of Portland. Rooster Rock State Park, just off I-84 east of Portland, includes several miles of sandy beach as does Sauvie Island, off Oregon Hwy. 30 northwest of Portland. You'll need to obtain a parking permit for Sauvie Island; it's available at the convenience store located just after you cross the bridge onto the island. Both beaches include clothing-optional sections, though these are well separated from the more popular clothing-required beaches.
