Dining: Cafes Frommer

If you'd like to sample some cafes around Portland that serve not only the full range of coffee drinks, but also have atmosphere, we recommend the following:

Café Lena, 2239 SE Hawthorne Blvd. (tel. 503/238-7087), located in the funky Hawthorne District, has occasional live music and tasty food but is best known for its poetry nights.

Coffee Time, 712 NW 21st Ave. (tel. 503/497-1090), is a favorite Northwest neighborhood hangout with tables outside, and a variety of atmospheres inside--a cafe with big wooden booths, a lounge with cracked leather chairs and a fake fireplace, and a dark Victorian drawing room. Take your pick. Popular with the young retrohippie crowd.

Located out beyond Hawthorne Boulevard's main shopping district, Common Grounds, 4321 SE Hawthorne Blvd. (tel. 503/236-4835), is a countercultural hangout where the magazine rack is filled with literary reviews, small press journals, and other lefty literature. The crowd of coffee drinkers tends to be tattooed and pierced.

* Peet's Coffee, 508 SW Broadway (tel. 503/973-5540), is a relative newcomer in Portland, and is notable not only for its great (and strong) coffee, but also for the fact that the space here is much larger than at any Peet's you'd find in Berkeley, California, where the chain originated.

Pied Cow, 3244 SE Belmont St. (tel. 503/230-4866), in a Victorian house decorated in Bohemian chic, has a couch on which to lounge and an outdoor garden. Soups and snack-type foods are served, too.

* Torrefazione Italia, 838 NW 23rd Ave. (tel. 503/228-1255), serves its classic brew in hand-painted Italian crockery, and has a good selection of pastries to go with your drink. Order a latte just to see what a wonderful job they do with the foam. Other locations are at 1403 NE Weidler (tel. 503/288-1608) and 1140 NW Everett (tel. 503/224-9896).

* World Cup Coffee & Tea, 1740 NW Glisan St. (tel. 503/228-4152), is a sophisticated little place on a tree-lined street in northwest Portland. Located away from any major shopping districts, this place has the feel of an undiscovered neighborhood gem.
