Getting to Know: Getting Around Frommer
On Foot

City blocks in Portland are about half the size of most city blocks elsewhere, and the entire downtown area covers only about 13 blocks by 26 blocks. These two facts make Portland a very easy place to explore on foot. The city has been very active in encouraging people to get out of their cars and onto the sidewalks downtown. The sidewalks are wide, and there are many small parks with benches for resting, fountains for cooling off, and works of art for soothing the soul.

If you happen to spot a person walking around downtown wearing a bright green jacket, he or she is probably a Portland Guide. These informative souls are there to answer any questions you might have about Portland--like "Where's the nearest latte stand?" Their job is simply to walk the streets and answer questions.
