star Amsterdams Historisch Museum (Amsterdam Historical Museum)
The museum is housed in the huge, beautifully restored 17th-century buildings of the former city orphanage. Few cities in the world have gone to as much trouble and expense as Amsterdam to display and explain its history, and few museums in the world have found as many ways to make such dry material as population growth and urban development as interesting as the latest electronic board game. Don't say you have little interest in the history of Amsterdam--just come to this museum. It's a beautiful and fascinating place that will give you a better understanding of everything you see when you go out to explore the city on your own. Gallery by gallery, century by century, you see how a small fishing village became a major world power; you'll also be able to see many of the famous paintings by the "Dutch masters" in the context of their time and place in history.

When you leave the Historisch Museum, cut through the Civic Guard Gallery, a narrow, 2-story skylit chamber bedecked with perhaps a dozen large and impressive 17th-century group portraits. This gallery is the back entrance to the Begijnhof.

Kalverstraat 92 and Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 359 (next to the Begijnhof). Phone: 020/523-1822 . Open: Mon-Fri 10am-5pm, Sat-Sun 11am-5pm. Admission Dfl 9 adults, Dfl 4.50 children 6-16, free for children under 6. Tram: 1, 2, 4, 5, 9, 16, 20, 24, or 25 to Spui.
