Woonboot Museum (Houseboat Museum)
You'll see many houseboats moored along the canals, river, and harbor of Amsterdam, but you won't be able to get aboard most of them unless you know the owner, or have housebreaking skills that can be applied on the water. The Hendrika Maria, a former commercial sailing ship built in 1914, is an exception. You'll see the original deckhouse, where the skipper and his family lived, complete with cupboard bed, and the cargo hold, now kitted out as remarkably spacious and comfortable living quarters. How do you get the ship's bottom cleaned? Might you sink? What happens in winter? These and other questions are answered in models, photographs, and books.

Opposite Prinsengracht 296 (at Elandsgracht). Phone: 020/427-0750 . Open: Tues-Sun 10am-5pm. Admission Dfl 3.75 adults, Dfl 2.50 children size 152 cm (5 feet) and under. Tram: 7, 10, or 20 to Marnixstraat.
