Planning a Trek Frommer
The Himalayas are the highest mountains on earth, and among their peaks and valleys wind thousands of miles of trails-the human highways of the Himalayas. For centuries the people of Nepal, Tibet, and India have traveled these trails as farmers, traders, and pilgrims. Today, thousands of foreigners from around the world are also walking these trails, discovering the countless wonders of the Himalayas.

If you are one of those people who for years has longed to climb the Himalayan peaks, this section will provide the basic information for planning your trek in Nepal. Should you book at home or in Nepal? How do you get a trekking permit? When should you go? What should you pack? Should you carry your own backpack or hire a porter? These are some of the questions that this section will answer.

Here you'll also find the names of some good Nepali trekking companies.

Keep in mind that a trek can be anything from an easy walk of just a few days to a months-long expedition, and that a trek of any length requires a great deal of advance planning. At least 6 months to a year before your trip, you must get your immunizations and start getting in shape if you're planning a long and strenuous trek. You should also make an airline reservation at least 6 months in advance. If you opt for a fully catered camping trek operated by a foreign adventure-travel company, you'll also want to see about making a tour reservation at least 6 months in advance. Choosing the right trek and the right mode of trekking is also of primary importance. What are your interests-people, mountains, birds, wildlife? This chapter will address these issues and help you to prepare for one of the most memorable experiences of your life.
