Trekking Routes: The Jomosom Trek Frommer
Spectacular views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhare, combined with natural and cultural diversity, make the * Jomosom Trek by far the most popular trek in Nepal. The trail passes through picturesque villages inhabited by different ethnic groups, and climbs from lush lowland forests to the arid wastelands of the upper Kali Gandaki, which is similar in many ways to the Tibetan Plateau. Except for 1 long day of climbing at the beginning, this trip is relatively easy and never ascends above 13,000 feet (3,962m), so most people will not experience altitude sickness. The lodges along this route are among the most luxurious (relatively speaking) of any trekking route in the country, which also adds to the enjoyment of the trek. For all of these reasons, this route, during the peak October-November trekking season, is positively overrun with trekkers. Expect human traffic jams and problems getting a room if you stop any later than 2pm. However, the large numbers of trekkers are generally a problem only if your expectation was to get away from it all and have a wilderness experience. If this is what you expected, do not hike this route in October or November. Try the winter or the monsoon seasons, or skip it entirely. Better yet, put aside your desire for solitude, and enjoy what is the finest trek in Nepal.

Although we describe this trek from Naya Pul up to Jomosom and Muktinath, it is also possible to fly in to Jomosom and then trek back down to Naya Pul (after visiting Muk-tinath). If you plan to fly one direction anyway, you should definitely fly in and hike out you'll have more downhill trekking this way. Also, you avoid the potential problem of getting stranded in Jomosom due to bad weather. Airlines that fly between Pokhara and Jomosom include Cosmic, Lumbini, Royal Nepal Airlines, and Yeti. These flights cost $55 one-way and are in very small planes, so make your reservation as soon as you can. Try to get a seat on the right side of the plane for a better view of the Himalayas.
