Planning a Trek: When to Trek Frommer
Because Nepal is subject to monsoon rains from June through mid-October, the trekking season is effectively limited to October through May. However, the favored time is the 6-week period immediately following the monsoon (between mid-Oct and the end of Nov). During this time, the skies are usually clear for most of the day, there is rarely any rain or snow, and temperatures are warm by day and cool at night. At lower elevations it can even be too hot for vigorous exercise, and trekking at low elevations can be quite unpleasant. The rains don't usually let up until sometime around the 15th to the 20th of October, so the very best time to arrive is around October 20th. Because this is the busiest season of the year, expect long lines for trekking permits and throngs of other trekkers on the more popular trails.

From the end of November through the end of January, the weather is cold and clear with temperatures going below freezing at night at altitudes above 3,000 or 4,000 feet. During the day, however, the cool temperatures make trekking very pleasant. You can expect 1 or 2 days of rain or snow sometime during this period. Fewer people trek in this season because of the weather; permit lines are shorter and the trails are less crowded. This is the best time to trek if you want to avoid the crowds and still see the mountains, but allow for some snow days and bring plenty of warm clothes.

By the end of January, the weather begins to warm up again, making February and March the next-most-popular trekking months. The sky is clear most of the time, though haze begins to obscure the views of the mountains. By April and May it is very hot in the lower elevations, and the haze often obscures the mountains entirely.
